Roaming Road is an independent bottler founded by Mike Gilmore who introduced his first line of rums (and other spirits) in 2024. Two years ago, I bought a bottle of his 9 year Jamaica rum, which was a high ester Hampden <>H, and quickly decided it was one of the very best rums I owned. In April of 2025, I shot Mike an email to ask about a different rum of his and happened to mention how much I enjoyed the <>H, and he said he had a “rare Hampden coming down the pike that will blow your doors off.” Well, it took a year and change, but here we are in September of 2026 with a 17 year DOK (the highest ester rum Hampden makes). And after trying this bottle, let me just say I’m gonna have to give my door guy a call.
Let’s start with the nose. When you open this bottle, you know you’re in for a treat. This is a ester bomb room-filler - it’s got everything you want from a top-tier Hampden. The grilled pineapple, of course, but also some bubble gum and caramel notes, along with boiled sweets and preserves. The esters are just jumping out of the glass as you nose it. One of the absolute best aromas I can remember on a rum.
On the palate, there’s a surprising heat from the spices intermingling with the fruit. I get caramel and sweet peppers - in a good way. It’s perfectly drinkable at 53.1%, which really lets the flavors come through. The higher ester marks from Hampden stand up well to the wood even at very long ages (and this is surely continentally aged), so there’s no issue with this being over-oaked. Aged DOK is always interesting because it offers those powerful esters and incredible sweetness at the same time. It’s got a light, breezy mouthfeel that’s not too drying on the tongue (like a lot of potent Hampdens can be).
This is a rum that stays with you. And there’s no mistaking which glass you poured this rum into. Overall, a high ester delight that’s surely in my top ten rums of the year. This is an easy 5 on Taste - an explosion of esters that’s still fruity enough to be approachable. For Haste, I’ll give it a 4 simply because there are other DOKs that pop up here and there. At $179, it’s comparable to other high ester Hampdens that we’ve seen (like the Astor C<>H), and given that it’s 17 years old, it’s probably fair market price. If you’re a Hampden lunatic like we are, you should see to it that you try this rum.
Taste/Haste Scale: 5 / 4
